But many people have worse IBS symptoms when they eat or drink certain foods or beverages. Most people with IBS experience worse or more-frequent symptoms during periods of increased stress. But while stress may make symptoms worse, it doesn't cause them. IBS occurs more frequently in people under age 50. IBS is more common among women. Genes may play a role, as may shared factors in a family's environment or a combination of genes and environment.

Good thing I know what the story actually is about, but... a 'less-informed' reader might turn away, thinking this is about scat or something else really gross like that. >.>

Ironic that I'm hopped up on prednisone & some antibiotics that I think are called Godzilla. I've got pneumonia gagantuosa, & lo & behold your story speaks to me. Goodness, do all such folks have to be possessed of IQs lower than their age? How does this guy manage to dress himself?
Given all that family and friends dished out on him, I'm surprised that: (a) he hadn't been institutionalized; and (b) his revenge was so weak...poison ivy/oak for most folks, a few days of prednisone will handle that.

I read your story only because the subject matter is a reality of my life. I suffer from IBS and was interested in your POV and your hypothasis. While I feel you were a tad off base with your explaination of passing wind, I found the rest of your essay interesting and quite possibly correct to a great degree. I enjoyed how the subject was approached (from the bowel POV)and probably learened more from Shamus's experiance than any of the specialists I've seen on the matter.
