What is a herniated disc? A herniated disc (or disk) is also referred to as a slipped or ruptured disc. Spinal discs are rubbery cushions that sit between individual vertebrae. As a disc naturally degenerates with age, the soft jelly-like center of the disc (nucleus) can herniate or tear through the tougher, rubbery exterior (annulus).
Diagnosing a Bulging or Slipped Disc. One step to diagnosing a herniated or slipped disc is to have an MRI of the affected area of the back. If you have a herniated disc, you will see terminology on the report such as the following: disc herniation, herniated nucleus pulposus, herniated, disc extrusion, extrusion, extruded, sequestered fragment, sequestered, and free fragment.
